“The student mentality really shines at events like the summer ball. Typically, events that demand formal dress, tuxedos and fancy outfits stifle the atmosphere with self-consciousness – stopping people from really enjoying the experience. But 2006 completely dispelled this tradition. Standing at the back of the live stage tent just after Rachel Stevens finished her performance will be one of the highlights of my time at university. Not because I got a good view of her ass, but because I witnessed 3000 students jumping up and down in unison, regardless of formality, throwing caution to the wind, and quite clearly thoroughly enjoying themselves. Feeling part of that 3000 will be an experience I’ll be quite happy to remember for the rest of my life.”

Glorious weather and a fabulous night indeed! Starting off with a glass of pimms and photos with friends in the garden late afternoon and finishing in the early hours. All a bit chaotic in between but the memories are a little hazy – something about a fountain and no trousers. I can’t really remember seeing many of the acts – it’s amazing how excited you get looking at the posters before the event and how little they seem to matter once you’re there. I’ve been to a couple of balls now and they never loose their appeal. There are always friends to say goodbye to and new ones to be made. Plus, with four or five thousand people there its one of the largest things we do as a student body which makes it quite special. Bring on June 15th!
